Garden Grove Unified School District knew it would take immense planning to improve their 2200-student La Quinta High School and its sister school, the 1800-student Pacifica High School. The district wanted to secure and maximize $40 million of AB 300 funds for this 210,000 sf new construction and modernization project, but in order to do so, they needed government agency approval, creative design solutions and expedited delivery. That’s where Westgroup came in. By employing our trust relations, technical knowledge and funding knowledge of DSA and OPSC, we were able to negotiate funding concerns and strategically calculate resources in accordance with design. We utilized fresh, modernized design elements that honed in on cost efficiency—not simplicity—and our strategic, fast-track and complex phasing system prevented disruption to educational delivery. Each new campus design reconfigured parking and student drop-off areas, created landscaped academic quads and added five classroom buildings, a dedicated science building, a new student and staff dining hall, a new library media center and a new 450-seat performing arts center. Our design purposely maximized natural daylighting to all classrooms to reduce overall campus energy consumption. Architecturally, we built the character of the new construction on the warmth found in the brick masonry of each school’s existing administration building. Our strategic design method resulted in 18 new and six modernized buildings, phased to be completed in under nine months without any disturbance to day-to-day classroom activities.

  • “I am thrilled and relieved that the State Allocation Board has provided facility hardship approvals under the Seismic Mitigation Program for La Quinta and Pacifica High Schools. The State’s multi agency process for approving the plans and specifications is both demanding and complex. We need the best consultants working collaboratively to get the design right while meeting strict deadlines. Westgroup Designs led the team and was able to build consensus for a new design. These rebuilt schools will serve students and staff, as well as parents and the community, for decades to come.”
