Los Alamitos High School Gymnasium

Building on the success of the Los Alamitos STEM Building, Westgroup Designs partnered again with the Los Alamitos Unified School District to create a transformative new gymnasium that anchors the campus’s evolving athletic zone. The 34,000-square-foot facility celebrates the District’s “Four A’s”: Academics, Athletics, Activities, and the Arts, by providing a vibrant, multipurpose hub for physical wellness, competition, and community connection.

Designed to serve the entire student body, the three-court gym includes 2,000 retractable seats, four team rooms, a weight training suite with outdoor plyometric areas, and dual concessions. Its double-height, glass-enclosed lobby, framed by a dynamic canopy inspired by the motion of a griffin wing, creates a civic entry and gathering space that showcases the Hall of Champions and the school’s proud athletic legacy.

The facility integrates advanced technology, including digital scoring, smart displays, and filming platforms that enhance both instruction and game-day experiences. Sustainability and wellness were central to the design, featuring high-efficiency HVAC systems, LED lighting, low-flow plumbing, and a Building Management System to optimize long-term performance.

Balancing durability with school pride, the material palette reintroduces warm brick and bold Los Alamitos blue accents, uniting the new facility with the broader campus. The Los Alamitos High School Gymnasium stands as a symbol of student achievement and community spirit, reflecting the District’s commitment to developing the whole student in mind, body, and spirit.

"Westgroup Designs, under the leadership of Sima Hassani, who once again brought vision and heart to this project, and, honestly, have you seen a high school gym ever look like this? I have not.

And if you think about the presence, they also did our STEM Building, the presence that it gives to the street but now to the presence to our students as soon as you come up this driveway, you can’t help but see this Griffin pride.

We are so blessed to work along such a talented and supportive architect team and design team. Thank you for your entire support.” - Dr. Andrew Pulver, Superintendent
