Westgroup Designs Honored With AIA Design Award For INDA Academy

Westgroup Designs Honored With AIA Design Award For INDA Academy

Westgroup Designs (WD) received a Merit Award for its design of INDA ACADEMY, at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Orange County Chapter Design Awards Gala, presented virtually on October 1st.

The project is a 25,000 square foot, Pre-K to 6 educational facility for the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD), focused on the goal of creating an inclusive 21st century neighborhood school with an innovative DREAMS curriculum (Design, Research, Engineering, Arts, Math and Science).

Citing the project’s sustainable concept for Adaptive Reuse and design quality, the AIA Jurors unanimously celebrated this project:

The design is well-considered, thoughtful, and nicely executed, including a playful slide that descends along the side of the building. Another great embodied carbon story that encourages the reuse of existing structures.”

The design team delivered a unique solution that would facilitate progressive hands-on learning for 225 students a year, and understand how this solution would enhance the community, leveraging the local climate to support indoor/outdoor educational activities with glazed retractable walls and highly flexible interior spaces. As part of the resilient design concept, WD focused on creating a healthier building, updating the design of the building skin, adding operable windows and a new ventilation system which exceeds energy requirements by 30% and provides 100% outside air for healthier indoor air quality.

Our responsibility as architects is to both dream and to build responsibly, Westgroup Designs Principal, Dr. Shazad Ghanbari said. “ This will be a transformational environment; an example for our next generation of emerging technology and learning experiences.”

We love it when you call us Big B.O.C.C.E

Westgroup Designs came out strong with bocce ball and rap skills at the 8th Annual Bocce Ball Tournament! Winning Best A+D Division Team and Most Spirited, we raised $2,750 for one of our favorite charities, Laura’s House.

WD’s Bocce Ball team name, The Notorious B.O.C.C.E., pays tribute to The Notorious B.I.G. who is ranked one of the top 10 greatest rappers of all time by Billboard Magazine. Gold crowns & chains, spirited shirts, Bocce skills, and a custom rap led WD to victory for both the Most spirited team and first place in the A+D Division!

We are so grateful for IOS and Haworth for putting on such a great event that creates an opportunity to raise money for Laura’s House, an important charity in Orange County.

8th Annual IOS + Haworth Charity Bocce Ball Tournament is a social gathering that raises money for the winning Bocce Ball teams’ charity of choice.

Laura’s House is a domestic violence safe refuge, providing over 4,000 abused women and children with shelter, as well as supportive services for 50,000 people such as counseling, life skills education and legal assistance. To learn more, click here.

WD’s Minotaur Tango takes 2nd Place at the IIDA Orange County Haute Couture!

WD’s Minotaur Tango takes 2nd Place at the IIDA Orange County Haute Couture!

Intriguing mythical creatures danced the tango, roamed magical lands, and lurked the depths of the runway – creating a fantastical night that gave everyone something to believe in.

IIDA Orange County’s 16th Annual Haute Couture “Believe – A Mythical Night” successfully dove into the mythical realm of mysterious creatures. The Loch Ness Monster, Unicorns & Pegasus, and Dragons were just a few of the many beings that graced the runway.

Combining Greek mythology and Spanish bullfighting, WD’s Minotaur Tango won over its spectators. The performance began with the Minotaur being lured away from his labyrinth by our Matador, followed by a battle for dominance over one another through a riveting tanda that turned into a captivating tango. The epic standoff ended with the rise and fall of our beloved characters, and in tradition, roses tossed on stage from the audience.

Westgroup Designs created ornate shoulder structures, fringed pants, multiple matador skirts, and intricate accessories – all within the allotted 1-hour time frame – while using only materials from the Interior Design industry. Upholstery fabric remnants, mosaic tile, wall covering, metal laminate, and paper mâché architecture plans were some of the key materials in the design of our two looks.

Upping the ante from winning last year’s People’s Choice Award, WD’s Minotaur Matador duo danced their way to second place!

A big thank you to our sponsors Knoll and KnollTextiles!

Westgroup Designs Wins the People’s Choice Award For Best Villain/Sidekick at This Year’s IIDA Fashion Show!

Westgroup Designs Wins The People’s Choice Award For Best Villain/Sidekick At This Year’s IIDA Fashion Show!

Everybody loves a hero, but no one forgets a villain. All kinds of evil dazzled the runway for IIDA’s 16th annual Haute Couture Fashion Show, but Ursula’s dark magic stole the show.

This year’s theme was “Villains”, which did not disappoint. Using a similar setup to the TV show Project Runway, Interior design and architecture firms, independent designers and students were given one hour to create a villain using finishes and materials utilized for interior design. The hustle was fun, fast, and crazy as teams scrambled and successfully created intricate costumes inspired by everyone’s favorite villains.

Westgroup Designs built four costumes from The Little Mermaid. Ursula, her two eel minions, and the little mermaid made memorable appearances on stage, with Ursula and her dark magic captivating the crowd.

A huge thank you to our sponsors, Mohawk Group and Daltile for helping make this vision happen!

Mission Complete: “A Cosmic Affair” Raises Over $50,000 for CASH’s Proposition 51 Campaign

“A Cosmic Affair” launched curiosity and reached new heights as the event brought in the third-largest sum raised from fundraising events for CASH’s Proposition 51 campaign. Westgroup Designs, Koury Engineering and Bernards hosted the extraterrestrial event of the light-year attracting over 150 attendees and raising over $50,000.

Westgroup Designs’ office took a galactic twist to raise money for the 2016 State School Bond Campaign. The $9 billion state school bond will fund new construction and modernizations for K-14 schools and provide matching funds for local bonds. 21st century learning environments require 21st century facilities, and the event had an outer space theme to inspire and launch curiosity for the future of learning.

Featuring high-tech, hands-on learning and STEAM ideas, “A Cosmic Affair” was the perfect event to raise funds for 21st century facilities. Virtual reality was on display, from VR headsets to holographic walls, as well as collaborative furniture and AR devices for classrooms. With Live and Silent Auctions that had prizes such as tours of SpaceX, raffles for drones, and games that could win you tickets to Tomorrowland at Disney, there were plenty of outerspace opportunities to have fun donating!

Bringing in over 150 attendees, the starry night was successful. More than $50,000 was raised, making “A Cosmic Affair” the third-largest grossing fundraiser event for Coalition for Adequate Student Housing’s Proposition 51 Campaign.
