Focused on both function and experience, the modernization introduced comprehensive exterior and interior improvements that elevate the day-to-day experience for students, staff, and visitors.

Exterior enhancements included a redesigned front drop-off area with a bold new entry portal, updated marquee signage, and a tiered student waiting zone. Campus usability and comfort were improved through the addition of new shade structures at both the outdoor dining area and the existing playground. A decorative privacy and security screen, upgraded fencing, and controlled-access entry points enhanced campus safety. Sustainable landscaping and drainage improvements were integrated throughout the site, including revitalized plantings in the central courtyard.

Interior upgrades focused on accessibility, flexibility, and functionality. These included an ADA-compliant reception desk, reconfigured office layouts, improved staff restrooms, and a reimagined backstage area connecting the MPR to the outdoor dining space. Classrooms were refreshed with new finishes and additional storage, while campus-wide door security and ADA hardware were added to meet modern standards.

Designed to serve the entire student body, the three-court gym includes 2,000 retractable seats, four team rooms, a weight training suite with outdoor plyometric areas, and dual concessions. Its double-height, glass-enclosed lobby, framed by a dynamic canopy inspired by the motion of a griffin wing, creates a civic entry and gathering space that showcases the Hall of Champions and the school’s proud athletic legacy.

The facility integrates advanced technology, including digital scoring, smart displays, and filming platforms that enhance both instruction and game-day experiences. Sustainability and wellness were central to the design, featuring high-efficiency HVAC systems, LED lighting, low-flow plumbing, and a Building Management System to optimize long-term performance.

Balancing durability with school pride, the material palette reintroduces warm brick and bold Los Alamitos blue accents, uniting the new facility with the broader campus. Spanning over 9,000 square feet and 200 feet in length, the Mirror Pool has long stood as a symbol of formality and tradition. The renovation preserves its historical character while introducing modern upgrades that enhance functionality, sustainability, and campus engagement.

The revitalized Mirror Pool will feature:

• New interior tilework
• Refinished exterior vessel wall plaster
• Updated wall coping
• Integrated LED lighting for dramatic nighttime illumination

With Trabuco Hills High School Athletics boasting the #1 Boys Track Team in Orange County and the football, lacrosse and track teams competing with top-notch OC talent, a new track and field has been a long time coming for athletes, coaches and fans alike.

The existing Trabuco Hills High School stadium previously housed a 10-year-old, deteriorating track and field with adjacent facilities over twenty years old. Saddleback Valley USD engaged Westgroup Designs to pump up the athlete and fan experience at the stadium. WD’s design of the new improvements includes the replacement of the existing synthetic turf with a more durable synthetic turf system; the replacement of the existing asphalt base and track surface with a new urethane track and asphalt; and accessibility upgrades to the adjacent stadium facilities, including the overall path of travel, drinking fountains, restrooms, bleacher seating, and assisted listening devices.

Located in Orange County, California, Los Alamitos High School has an average enrollment of over 3200 students in its long-standing legacy of excellence, in the District’s “Four A’s”: Academics, Athletics, Activities, and the Arts, and has received such notable recognitions as the US Dept. of Education’s National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, as well as being designated a California Distinguished School and California Gold Ribbon School.

The project program was formed as a collaborative effort with Los Alamitos Unified School District, educational stakeholders, business partners, community members, and local community colleges. The design acknowledges the district’s desire to produce a long-term solution for this high-performance environment, as well as to replace aging campus facilities predominantly 50 years old.

As part of the District’s 2018 Measure G facilities improvement bond measure, the District proposed to demolish the existing Los Alamitos High School Administration and Media Center buildings to pave the way for a new multistory Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) classroom building that will provide students and staff modern facilities that will support the campus.

The new 3-story, 86,000 GSF building replaced a majority of the 30 existing portable classrooms with permanent facilities, accommodates the entire Science department, and is located at the front of the campus to enhance school safety and improve vehicular access.

The ground floor of the new building will house student-services program spaces that include Administration, Health Services, Counseling Services, Campus Discipline & Safety, Campus Information Technologies Support, Media Center, and Career Center. Specialized Career Technical Education (CTE) instruction spaces are also located on the ground floor for Computer Technologies pathways focused on computer programming and applied engineering (robotics). The large, shaded courtyards and stadium seating areas function as outdoor opportunities for flexible learning and social activities.

The two upper floors of the building house 15 general classrooms, 15 science classrooms, and associated student and staff support spaces, including dedicated Professional Learning Community (PLC) spaces on each floor for enhanced collaboration between teaching disciplines.

As an architectural expression of this inspirational program, the large framed “Window of Opportunity” above the main entrance is in the school’s brand signature royal blue color, presenting a new public face to the community as it welcomes curious minds, with the collective goal of elevating the civic identity of the school to a post-secondary standard. A light and bright building envelope, washing interior spaces with natural daylight from every elevation, the visual texture is enhanced by a timeless palette of masonry, steel, glass, and concrete which integrates with existing campus buildings and complements adjacent outdoor landscaped areas.

Standing as a beacon of achievement in the community, this new facility learning environment, befitting the high-performing standards of Los Alamitos High School’s teachers and students, will prepare tomorrow’s leaders for great success beyond the classroom, wherever life takes them.

With a new identity to share with the greater Orange County community, this building is in a prominent location on the corner of their current campus. Contrasting with the relatively anonymous facility it will replace, the New Student Center clearly announces its significance to Fountain Valley and to the larger Orange County community. Its transparent north façade makes visible the activities of the College, glowing warmly after dark and allowing abundant daylight deep into the building during the day.

With the first floor organized to promote convenient and welcoming student “customer” access to one-stop services and counseling, the second floor is a secure executive and administrative area. Both floors are designed to encourage departmental interaction, maximizing efficiency by leveraging adjacencies and sharing staff, technology, and amenities. This intentional flexibility further serves to “future proof” the building, providing adaptability to accommodate the ebb and flow of departments as student program needs, workplace strategies, and technology continue to evolve.

Interiors feature integral wayfinding graphics and a color palette that reinforces the new Coastline brand identity. The transparent, light-filled interiors flow seamlessly out onto a range of outdoor spaces – all offering an expansion of program possibilities in the benign Southern California climate.

Upon completion of the new Student Services Center, the existing facility will be abandoned and demolished. It will be replaced by surface parking traversed by a landscaped pathway to effectively link the Student Services Center with the College’s other existing office facility to the south, a new pedestrian armature at the heart of a true, multi-building campus in Fountain Valley.
