Westgroup Designs partnered with Providence to deliver a new outpatient care center within a single-story multi-suite retail building at the Outlets of San Clemente. Developed as a first-generation tenant improvement in a newly constructed shell, the project transforms 4,687 SF of urgent care space and 7,556 SF of primary and specialty care into a unified, high-performance clinical environment that supports Providence’s expanding community-based care model.

Designed for operational efficiency and improved clinical throughput, the facility incorporates Providence exam room standards along with custom room configurations developed by Westgroup Designs to enhance staff workflow, reduce patient wait times, and streamline care delivery. The program includes a full suite of new exam rooms, procedure rooms, clinical support spaces, reception and waiting zones, staff work areas, and integrated technology and equipment systems. All mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and low-voltage systems were fully coordinated for new infrastructure, including rooftop mechanical installations that support complex clinical operations.

The design draws inspiration from San Clemente’s Spanish coastal character, balancing warmth, simplicity, and clarity to create an environment that feels both welcoming and professional. More importantly, this project serves as a flagship example of Providence’s commitment to delivering accessible, convenient, community-centered healthcare. By establishing a strong architectural identity and a highly efficient clinical layout, Westgroup Designs helped shape a new benchmark for Providence’s outpatient network across Southern California.

Westgroup Designs continued its 29-year relationship with Riverside University Health System to create the Restorative Transformation Center—a 30-bedroom, 21,000-square-foot facility designed to support the substance abuse recovery and rehabilitation of multi-generational individuals in the Riverside region.

This purpose-driven facility blends function and compassion, offering a safe, supportive environment that promotes healing and personal growth. The Center includes dedicated wings for client housing, variously sized group therapy and activity rooms, triage, consultation, and exam spaces, along with a commercial kitchen and administrative offices—all thoughtfully designed with a calming palette and residential sensibility to foster comfort, dignity, and a sense of belonging.

Unique to this facility is the integration of clinical care spaces not included in RUHS’s Arlington Recovery Center (ARC), broadening the scope of services offered on-site. The Restorative Transformation Center delivers a comprehensive recovery program focused on helping residents achieve long-term stability and successfully reintegrate into the community with renewed health and hope.

WD is committed to behavioral health environments that restore lives, support holistic wellness, and strengthen community care systems.

Minutes away from the Taquitz Canyon, facing the grand San Jacinto mountain range in the heart of Palm Springs, is a new, 35,000 square foot regional community care center for Riverside University Health Systems, stands as the predominant, public, comprehensive outpatient medical facility, elevating the delivery of services to the city’s most vulnerable residents, while fostering inclusivity in a diverse demographic.

This new healthcare facility will provide services for the city’s indigent population in addition to being the local clinic for many in the adjacent, dense residential neighborhoods. Suited to compete with private health facilities, the innovative program includes an enhanced, transparent, “one-stop-shop” accessible approach to healthcare service delivery, prioritizing patient care.

Situated on a 3.75 acre site, on land formerly owned by the Agua Caliente Indians, the building is a resilient design, slated for LEED Certification, framed with drought-tolerant landscape; incorporating clean air, electric vehicle and long term bicycle parking, as well as 180 degree sweeping views, washing the public areas with daylight, extensive solar control systems and harvested daylight within interior areas.

The architecture features undulating planes of stone and glass, fitted with sunshades, solar louvers and motorized shade control systems, maximizing the value of natural light while minimizing heat gain and glare. Views of the desert landscape are visible from every elevation, connecting the facility to the community beyond.

Focusing on safety and security both on site and within the building, the clean lines, and transparent public entries, enhance visibility and access, while the neutral material and color palette, evokes the warmth and serenity of the natural desert landscape.

A coordinated wayfinding system, as well as automatic control systems and touchless access points, integrating both controlled and intuitive programs, are designed for easy navigation of public spaces to enhance the safe, secure and efficient patient experience. From signage to graphics, bold branding visually welcomes the diverse and inclusive clientele of the community.

The strategically-planned public space circulation, grounded by a centrally-located registration desk, promote clear communication, flexibility and access to various departments and services, while maintaining required patient privacy. Beyond the public spaces, efficient Medical Assistant Station “Pods” control patient and work flow, as service hubs to all departments.

The unique character of this building is expressly created to match its function and reflect the integrity and character of the population it serves, while its design resilience reflects the city’s support of environmental stewardship. Through the design, we were compelled to honor and welcome a diverse public, integral to the Palm Springs regional landscape, with critical services. This is a community of people that will now have a place to call their own.

The ARC sits on approximately 10 acres of a 48-acre county-owned parcel of land. It is a community-based program that assists in the prevention of incarceration with the intent to break the cycle of recidivism.

As part of the RUHS Behavioral Health Campus, WD designed a 3-building Facility for its recovery programs. The two-building, 20,000 sf, 54-bed facility, provides in-patient housing and support for those requiring both mental and substance abuse treatment. Including a separate wing with critical design safety details for those experience mental health issues, the environment provides separate residence wings for men and women, flexible multi-purpose rooms and spaces, and an administrative building with additional shared activity rooms and staff support, all incorporating natural light and a soothing color palette. The third building, the Sobering Center, is a 2,600 square foot outpatient facility, designed to serve as a transitional space for client recovery, prior to their next stage of treatment. Featuring warm and welcoming finish materials in an open, multi-purpose space, infused with natural light, the multi-purpose space extends to an outdoor patio with shade cover to provide additional usable space for concurrent activities with ample support spaces for flexible activities.

Westgroup Designs partners with Doheny Eye Institute as it embarked on the development of a new headquarters at 150 North Orange Grove Boulevard in Pasadena.

For the past two years, Westgroup has worked closely with Doheny staff and leadership to realize their goals and aspirations for DEI’s new 115,000 SF new home for their administration, research & development and medical facility. Through our comprehensive and collaborative programming, planning, and visualization, the Westgroup Designs team has led an interactive process to define and develop the design for this revolutionary environment that will satisfy Doheny’s research, conferencing, and office needs for years to come. The concept includes strategically converting an office building into highly functional laboratories, administration, and conference facility, with open, welcoming spaces that also offer a sense of security. This approach requires upgrading the building systems to accommodate higher mechanical and electrical needs and stabilizing the building structure to maintain research activity. The design concept creates a community-oriented and collaborative, sustainable and flexible environment, respecting DEI tradition while looking forward to future innovations. As Doheny Eye Institute moves forward to implement its ambitious vision, we are delighted to have started with their project team and stakeholders on the ground floor, to establish the design foundation and process for developing this home for the future of Vision Science.

Comprehensive Health Center Revitalization creates an environment of care and healing. WD integrated new community-based zones into an existing facility, with aesthetics and flexible functionality which promote a focus on wellness, giving the brand, staff and patients a new environment for support and care.

With multiple open, inviting spaces for patients and guests to use while between visits or for personal health education, the flexible common areas feature nature-inspired graphics and imagery, and a soothing finish palette with varied textures to engage the senses. Multiple “pods” provide various clinic services, from personal behavioral health and WIC, to the pharmacy and radiology departments.

Strategically created zones with varied seating configurations and styles offer comfort and foster a flexible approach in a choice of accommodations, and are easily reconfigured for group meetings, activities or specific events.

As a community-based Center, the flexible meeting spaces, including conference rooms and larger training and meeting rooms, foster both collaborative care and education, inviting the public in throughout the year. The Fast Care center within the facility provides both immediate and after-hours medical assistance.

Having provided design services previously for the new Corona and Moreno Valley based RUHS Health Centers, this is the third of many more RUHS centers to come, where the need for integrated services is paramount.

The future of care depends on design solutions like this, which evolve the practice and brand necessary to deliver an enhanced experience in support of the RUHS vision to lead the transformation of healthcare facilities and inspire wellness for the community it serves.

WD Achieves 45,000 sf Medical Clinic Brand Revitalization.

Opening in 1893, Riverside County’s first general hospital, RUHS Medical Center now stands as pillar of excellence in health care and medical education in the region. Through ground-breaking advances in practices, services and technical innovation, RUHS continued to grow, requiring a new medical clinic in Corona to extend its reach with medical, office and education spaces that will provide support and healing for the community, and space to support the curriculum and educational goals of medical students.

In the last few years, A shift in medical design toward evidence-based ideology now incorporates a personal perspective, focusing on elevating the patient experience through the selection of finishes, comfortable waiting area furnishings, energizing artwork and integrated technology. The wayfinding experience has also benefited from technology, with the advent of digital touch screen information and entertainment in the lobbies and waiting areas. The future of care depends on design solutions which evolve the practice and brand necessary to deliver an enhanced experience in support of the RUHS vision, to lead the transformation of healthcare and inspire wellness for the community.

WD Transforms Former Credit Union into Riverside University Health System Teaching Institution.

Visualizing the existing 26,000 sf former credit union as a new RUHS facility with three care clinics, WD synthesized the healthcare, wellness, educational, administrative, branding and community goals into a strategic solution which resolves this client’s previous issues with organization, collaboration and integration.

Encouraging social interaction and communication among healthcare staff to provide the most integrated care for patients, teamwork zones are strategically placed at the center of action, dynamically linking all 3 clinics. A concierge station, waiting rooms, staff support areas, 26 exam rooms, 2 procedure rooms, a lab, imaging suite, and a mental health office surround the central hub for efficient access to services.

Intuitive wayfinding supports effortless navigation for patients. Key signage complements highlighted department entries with generous seating areas adjacent. Feature graphics deliver evocative images of succulents and other flora, offering soothing, nature-inspired color and imagery, along with radial, textural patterns and seating compositions that playfully reflect the aesthetic succulent concept and the facility’s iconic location on Cactus Street.

As WD continues to support the mission and goals of our RUHS client with innovative and inspiring solutions, our primary focus remains to provide design solutions which focus on creating a thriving care environment for both the staff and the community they serve.
